So picture that you're in a prayer meeting with Jesus himself. One person (probably in the youth group in Moreno Valley) is asking about her hamster. Another is wanting prayer about an upcoming test that will surely decide his fate. Another is praying asking for guidance on whether or not he ought to date the girl he just met and is not sure what her name is. Now it's Jesus' turn. Refresher course, Jesus is the Sovereign God. He is before all things and holds all things together. He is in absolute un-need of anything at all to be satisfied.
Well, on Mount Gethsemane, we see Jesus and the disciples at a prayer meeting of sorts. Jesus goes up to pray with his friends, tells them that he's in incredible agony and tells them to pray together. Peter James and John look at each other no doubt pondering the theological implications of what Jesus would possibly have to pray for. Here it is- what does God pray to himself for? "Father, all things are possible for you (which is absolutely true- just as it would be to say about the Son). Remove this cup from me. Yet not as I will, but what you will."HOLY CRAP!!! Jesus appeals to God's omnipotence and establishes God's capability to do whatever he wants. What agony Jesus must have been going through right here. He actually asks the Father if it would be possible to modify the "Plan A" of history. This has been the point of redemption history, which is to say that it is the point of all human history- which, for a God who exists outside of time, means that all of history pointed to this moment. Jesus says- "Father, change all of history."
Just hold that truth in your mind for a second and then look at what else Jesus prays. He explicitly lays all the responisbility on the Father himself. He makes his case and leaves it in the hands of the reliable Father whose interest is for the best of his glory and the best of his people. Jesus' prayer request not only shows us the incredible tension that exists in this moment in the garden, but his radical trust in the Father whose power, knowledge and love have no limits.
Praise to the Lamb who was obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
